African Christian Democratic Party

 

"The ACDP stands for: Christian principles, freedom of religion, an open market economy, family values, community empowerment and human rights in a federal system

 

African National Congress

 

The ANC site has a wealth of sources. ANC policy documents, ANC discussion documents, press releases, historical documents, conference documents, speeches/photographs of Nelson Mandela and of other ANC officials, South African Press Assoc. news reports, the South African national anthems, the Freedom Charter, photos of ANC officials, etc.

 

AZAPO

 

The black consciousness party. Information on its related bodies: Azanian Youth Organisation, Azanian Student Convention, Azanian Student Movement, history of the Black Consciousness Movement, biography of Bantu Stephen Biko and other leaders, policy documents, speeches, slides of Stephen Biko's funeral in 1977, its monthly newsletter, Letsetse, The Flea, press releases, links to related sites

 

Christian Democratic Party

 

The Christian Democratic Party is a newly formed party and will be contesting the elections for the first time on April 14. Their website is a handy resource with information about the parties vision, alliances, election manifesto, their lists of candidates, etc.

 

Democratic Alliance

 

Opposition party formed June 2000 from a merger of the New National Party (National Party until 1998) and the Democratic Party. Oct. 27, 2001 Marthinus van Schalkwyk, the leader of the New National Party, in a clash with Tony Leon (former Democratic Party head) pulled out of the Democratic Alliance with other senior members of the New National Party.

 

Freedom Front Plus

 

Mainly white opposition party. Website available in both Afrikaans and English and contains press statements, issues of their newsletter, etc.

 

Green Party of South Africa

 

Promotes "the health of our planet, ecological awareness, social responsibility, non-violence, equality for women and men of all races, broad based involvement in decision-making, animals and all life forms, the welfare of people, and future generations,..." Has their constitution, discussion documents, policy positions, a discussion list, election results, news, etc.

 

Independent Democrats

 

Profile of Party leader, Patricia de Lille and other leaders. De Lille is the former Chief Whip of the Pan African Congress. Based in Salt River, South Africa

 

Inkatha Freedom Party

 

The IFP's site has speeches, press releases, the KwaZulu-Natal 1996 Constitution, an online form to join their mailing list, etc.

 

Minority Front

 

The Minority Front is a "socio-political party with clearly defined objectives that are designed to actively promote the true principles of democracy in the new South Africa in an equitable manner and to sustain the interests of all minority groups in the country." Their site provides further information about the political party.

 

Nasionale Aksie

 

The Nasionale Aksie was founded on 22 June 2002 in Pretoria. "The National Action with its fresh, modern and dynamic approach to politics wants to offer a new political home to the record amount of voters who have lost their trust in existing parties and who are looking for a party that will fight for a better South Africa". Their website which can be viewed in both English and Afrikaans is a handy resource containing their manifesto, core values, speeches, leaders etc.

 

New National Party

 

Opposition Party formed from the National Party which was the  ruling party during the Apartheid era. The site has  press statements, policy papers, research papers etc.

 

Pan African Congress of Azania

 

The PAC was formed in 1959 after a breakaway from the African National Congress. Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe was the PAC's first president, the current leader is Dr Motsoko Pheku. Their website is a handy tool with  containing their elections  manifesto, policies, history and even a photo gallery.

 

The Organisation Party

 

This new party is led by Brad Wood and Larey Van der Westhuizen. Works to combat crime, wants reintroduction of the death penalty, opposes illegal immigration.  Their website has their party constitution, newsletters, articles, etc

 

United Democratic Movement

 

The UDM  "is the political home of all South Africans, united in the spirit of South Africanism". The Website has further information about the political party.

 

United Christian Democratic Party

 

The vision of the UCDP "is to be the leading party in uniting all South Africans, Christians and non-Christians alike, in a truly democratic, non-racial and non-sexist partnership..."Their website contains their election manifesto ( which is available in English, Afrikaans and Setswana) ,events, etc

The International  Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance is "an intergovernmental organization with member states from all continents, has a mandate to support sustainable democracy worldwide." IDEA operates at an interface between those who analyse and monitor trends in democracy and those who engage directly in political reform or act in support of democracy at home and abroad. The site is useful when looking at issues such as voter turnout etc
