Notes:

1.    These results sheets reflect the make-up of the National Assembly and provincial legislatures as a result of the 2004 elections (and the subsequent ACDP/AZAPO court case).

2.    Parties that did not gain seats in 2004 are not reflected.

3.    Because only parties that participated and won seats in 2004 are reflected, the totals for floor-crossing (in 2003), 1999 and 1994 may not count up to the total seats available.

Heard on Election day:

President Thabo Mbeki: "The politicians have been doing a lot of talking...it's now time for the people to speak"

Former President Nelson Mandela: "I feel elated that I can be able to assert my right as a citizen and I sincerely hope that the entire world will abandon violence and use peaceful methods of asserting their right as citizens"

Former President F.W. de Klerk: "The next 10 years will be dominated by the need for orderly, effective socio-economic transformation. We need to work together to achieve that"

Archbishop Desmond Tutu: "Often they say the first election after democracy is the last. Many countries degenerate into dictatorships. We are disproving that. We are taking it in our stride".

Tony Leon, leader of opposition Democratic Alliance: "Today is the day that the voter is sovereign...I have every faith and confidence in their judgment by which I will obviously abide."

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, former wife of Nelson Mandela: "We are absolutely certain of an enormous victory"

Brigalia Bam, chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission: "It's amazing. We hear that some people were at (polling) stations at five o'clock in the morning. Both young and old -- it's fantastic."

Cowen Bantjatwa, voter in Joe Slovo squatter camp, Cape Town: "I think it is of great importance for me to vote. In the past years I have been denied my franchise, which is my right to vote.
