A scientific study among Free State gold miners who were employed by Anglo American South Africa, has confirmed a high prevalence of silicosis and tuberculosis.
The study of close to 780 former workers showed a 25% infection rate. South African medical researchers conducted the research and published their findings in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine last week.
The study recommends a comprehensive programme for the ex-workers, including surveillance for compensation and treatment as well as support.
