Samwu held a protest march in Groblersdal today over rising food prices

May 09, 2008, 16:15
The SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) held a protest march in Groblersdal today over rising food prices and poor service delivery in the Sekhukhune district municipality, the union said.
Local Samwu secretary Elias Mampane said the march started at the Groblersdal stadium and ended in Voortrekker Street at the mayor's offices.
The march was in protest against rising food prices, nepotism in awarding municipal positions, lack of relevant skills in the municipalities and poor service delivery. Samwu further protested against outsourcing and privitisation of municipal functions and services.
A memorandum highlighting Samwu's concerns was not handed over to the mayor because he was not present.
Mampane said the union would hold a provincial protest march in Polokwane in Limpopo on May 16. There a memorandum, that includes its concerns about the Sekhukhune district municipalities, will be handed to the provincial government MEC, Maite Nkoane-Mashabane. - Sapa
