About 500 members of the three trade unions, United Association of South Africa (Uasa), United Transport and Allied Trade Union and Satawu are marching to the Transnet head offices at Carlton Centre in Johannesburg in protest over the reconstruction at the parastatal. This is the third day of a strike in Gauteng, Limpopo, North West and Mpumulanga.
Hundreds of commuters are still experiencing transport problems. In Mabopane, north of Tshwane, commuters claim that Metrorail promised buses, but they were not told where to find them.
Some say the strike has affected their relationship with their employers and they are pleading with Transnet to address their problems as soon as possible. Uasa says the current crisis at Transnet will not be resolved by public enterprises minister Alec Erwin's public assurances that there will be no job losses at the parastatal.
The three unions have confirmed that they will stage a national strike on March 6. They say further strikes will follow if the crisis is not resolved.
