Metrorail to provide more buses, trains

Transnet workers are marching to the head offices in Carlton centre

Transnet workers say they will stage a national strike next month

February 22, 2006, 09:00

Metrorail says it will increase the number of buses on Johannesburg routes affected by the Transnet strike to 235 today. The company says train services have improved further today as the strike enters its third day.

Thousands of Transnet workers will march to the parastatal's headquarters in central Johannesburg this morning. They are unhappy about Transnet's restructuring process.

Striking trade unions the SA Transport and Allied Workers Union, the United Association of SA and the United Transport and Allied Trade Union have now confirmed that they will stage a national strike on March 6.

The unions say further strikes will follow if the crisis is not resolved.
