Tomorrow is the deadline for South African taxpayers to submit their annual tax returns. The South African Revenue Service (SARS) says there has been a noteworthy improvement on the number of tax returns received before the cut-off date, but long queues are still expected at the service's offices tomorrow.
Today, in the central business district of Johannesburg, SARS officials were at hand to assist tax payers. They say there is little doubt that tomorrow will be another long day. The revenue service says 2.7 million returns were sent out; so far 1.9 million taxpayers have responded.
Pravin Ghordan, the SARS commissioner, was in Pretoria today to see how his staff was coping. Ghordan says he is satisfied that there are no bottlenecks in the system. "There is about a 12 to 15% increase on what we have done last year. We have also introduced electronic filing this year and over 45 000 people have registered for that service. About 20 000 (electronic) returns have already come in."
In some on the major centres, offices will be open on Saturday morning to help latecomers.
