Consumers to be hit hard by next month's petrol price hike
|
April 30, 2008, 06:00
The price of diesel is likely to rise above R10 a litre for the first time next month while petrol will cost just under R9.50 per litre.
Economists say fuel prices will rise by betweem 40 and 60 cents a litre due to higher oil prices. Last month, the Minerals and Energy Department announced that it would impose a minimum increase of five cents per litre - that is above the normal price adjustments.
The move is aimed at recovering about R3 billion passed on to motorists in previous adjustments. Economists have warned that the steep fuel hikes will push food prices even higher.
