Dramatic increase in SA wine exports
|
April 15, 2008, 17:45
The good news continues for South African wine makers in the international market. With a dramatic increase in exports, the stage is set for the industry to leave a pronounced mark on global commerce.
The French are perceived to be the connoisseurs when it comes to the fruits of the gods. But South African wine makers are treading new paths in a very fickle industry.
The continued drought in Australia and much lower grape harvests in France and Italy have boosted local exports. With an increase of 35% since last year, new records are set.
The weak rand is part of this year's success story. While volume exports increase, there are still no indications of the effect it will have on the production level as no new job opportunities have been created yet. It is still early days, but if the current trend continues the South African wine industry could see significant growth in the next few years.
