Double trouble for SA motorists next month

Motorists will be paying more for petrol

February 22, 2008, 08:15

South African motorists face a double whammy next month with toll fees to increase between 3% and 4% and petrol prices likely to rise by at least 55 cents a litre.

The country's most expensive toll gate that at Machadodorp on the N4, will see fees for motor vehicles rise from R46 to R49.

Heavy-duty trucks will pay between R136 and R283 up from between R126 and R262 being paid at the moment. Another fuel hike is also expected next week, with the oil price rising over $100 a barrel and the rand falling.

Meanwhile, the rand has recovered from a 16-month low. Analysts say the currency's plunge the previous day could be linked to a speculative attack.
