AngloGold warned against using power generators

Eskom says the use of generators by the mining sector could spark a national fuel shortage

February 07, 2008, 18:30

The world's second largest gold producer, AngloGold Ashanti, has been warned not to use its own power generators. That is despite ongoing disruptions affecting production. Eskom says the use of generators by mines could spark a national fuel shortage.

Releasing its fourth quarter production figures today, the gold miner said it was only able to use its generators for emergencies.

Production fell 5% during October, November and December last year due to a number of reasons, including mining accidents.

The company expects the new year to be even worse given the recent outages.
