Milk prices set to increase amid shortages

Consumers can expect another rise in the milk price in the near future

Milk product shortages are predicted to continue for some time

August 21, 2007, 16:30

Consumers can expect another rise in the milk price in the near future and milk product shortages could continue for some time. This emerged at the annual general meeting of the Eastern Cape Milk Producers organisation in Port Elizabeth.

Many dairy farmers left the industry, but those remaining are breathing easier after the producer price of milk increased by about 40% this year.

Industry spokesperson, Bertus de Jongh, claims other players in the milk chain are cashing in on the situation. "The dilemma is that retail prices have gone up faster than producer prices. It means someone is profiteering," he said.
