Fuel shortages in Gauteng are set to continue into the weekend
|
August 03, 2007, 19:00
British Petroleum (BP) says its fuel distribution chain is running smoothly in the Western Cape, with 95% operational efficiency now reported in the province. BP has started using independent contractors after scores of drivers went on strike on Monday.
Countrywide fuel shortages have been experienced since Wednesday. Zipporah Mothoa, the BP spokesperson, says in the Western Cape operations are back to normal. Mothoa says Gauteng remains a concern, as their trucks are finding it difficult to deliver in the Johannesburg area due to security reasons.
“We have fuel available and we are ready to deliver. But it is regrettable that our efforts to deliver are hampered by the intimidation of contractors... We wouldn't like to expose our employees or contractors to violence," said Mothoa.
Meanwhile, the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood, and Allied Workers' Union (Ceppwawu) says it will meet the National Petroleum Employers Association tomorrow in an attempt to end the week-long strike in the fuel industry.
