Gautrain project on track despite opposing views

The Gautrain is expected to cost R20 billion

The Gautrain is expected to cost R20 billion

November 18, 2005, 11:00

The Gauteng provincial government says the unique facilities that the Gautrain will have justify the project's cost. It says it's confident that the Gautrain project is on track, despite the recommendations by the parliamentary transport portfolio committee that the project should not go ahead.

The committee has called the project "high risk" and says it lacks integration with regional transport plans.

The Gauteng government is to submit a report to the Cabinet on the project soon. Th cost of completing the project may exceed the latest projection of R20 billion.

Ignatius Jacobs, the Gauteng's public transport MEC, says a vigorous process has been met in terms of treasury regulations.
