Africa - The Cradle of Civilisation!
Ernie van Biljon - Sunday 06 April 2008

I have always found the claim that Africa was the "Cradle of Civilisation" hard to believe, but the rhetoric in most of the Zimbabwe election messages about "hero" Mugabe and the bad, bad, bad Whites, Colonialism, Apartheid, the West, etc., have finally convinced me that it is actually true! All I have read is puerile emotional dribble, with no regard for logic or fact - which shows that Africa, after 40,000 years has not yet grown up and is still in that cradle, hence the childish behaviour to blame everybody but themselves for the mess they have created and find themselves in! Surely, if civilisation started in Africa, this continent should have been on the forefront of scientific development, technology, morality, economic stability and progress and not be in a situation where they have to depent on the rest of the "backward" world to feed them, help stop wars and genocide, give them medical, technical and agricultural support to survive, let alone help themselves. I wish I could see a different future for South Africa to that which all of the other African countries have displayed. Yet when I read these childish comments, see Mbeki's passive support for somebody who has felt absolutely nothing for his subjects, hear our future state president's support for this selfdestructive behaviour, then I weep for the innocent majority of people in this country who might have had the chance to have a better future, but will never experience it - nor will their children!
