Foreign nationals seek refuge at police stations

May 12, 2008, 17:15

Dozens of foreigners living in Alexandra outside Sandton are seeking refuge at police stations after a series of xenophobic attacks. One person was killed and more than 50 injured in weekend clashes.

Alexandra residents accuse foreigners of crime and taking their jobs. Twenty people have been arrested in connection with the attacks. Police reinforcements have been rushed into Alexandra after foreigners were attacked.

This is not the first incident in Alexandra. As long ago as 1994, foreigners were rounded up by residents, fingered for crime, and taken to the police station.

Locals warn of more blood letting if the foreigners return.

Last month two people died and several more were injured in attacks against foreigners in Atteridgeville outside Pretoria.
