May 08, 2008, 20:30
Zimbabwe's opposition said today that it is still not planning to participate in a presidential run-off against President Robert Mugabe.
"Our official position still remains the same that we are not participating," Movement Democratic Change (MDC) Secretary-General Tendai Biti told reporters. But he added that the MDC would hold important talks with civic society groups from Zimbabwe on Saturday and hold a news conference "to put this issue to rest."
Meanwhile, agricultural worker unions in Zimbabwe say child labour is on the increase and many farm workers are entangled in wage negotiations with new farmers. General Secretary of the Zimbabwe General Agriculture and Plantation Workers' Union, Gertrude Hambira, says new farmers are offering workers 30 million Zimbabwe dollars per month, which is equivalent to about 60 South African cents.
Hambira says farm workers are still battling to get compensation for loss of land. - Additional reporting by Reuters
