‘Run-off in Zimbabwe unlikely amid the violence’

President Thabo Mbeki and President Robert Mugabe

Mbeki was selected by SADC to mediate in Zimbabwe

May 07, 2008, 16:45

The leader of the South African component of a SADC observer mission in Zimbabwe, Kingsley Mamabolo, says presidential run off elections in Zimbabwe cannot take place in the current violent climate.

Mamobolo says leaders from both Zanu-PF and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) should pronounce themselves against violence as it is dragging the country into more chaos.

A South African facilitating team is in Zimbabwe after being mandated by SADC mediator, President Thabo Mbeki. The team comprising eight members will make recommendations to Mbeki.
