Speaking at a May Day rally in Orkney in the North West, ANC President Jacob Zuma again spoke out against reports of rising human rights violations and torture in Zimbabwe.
Zuma used the occasion to strongly rebuke the Zimbabwean government, condemning widespread reports that a reign of terror has been unleashed against civilians supposedly linked to the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
Zuma has also defended the tough line adopted by the new ANC leadership against Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF.
Cosatu celebrates 22 years
Meanwhile, May Day has been celebrated throughout the country. The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) marked 22 years since its establishment. It is regarded as one of the few rapidly growing labour federations in the world.
The day also gave officials an opportunity to voice their concerns and developments. Addressing people during Workers Day celebrations in Makhado, Limpopo ANC
Secretary Cassel Mathale says the party's programmes and policies are still in the interest of the poor and workers.
He says the ANC recognises workers as an important part of society, particularly because they were the backbone of the party's struggle against apartheid.
The South African Communist Party also called on the government to oppose Eskom's move to increase electricity prices.
