Zimbabwe Solidarity Coalition has accused the ruling Zanu-PF of making a mockery of the country's independence. A wide variety of Zimbabwean civil society organisations and non-governmental groups have joined opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, in saying there is no reason to celebrate that country's independence. Zimbabwe's marking its 28th year of independence from British colonial rule.
Tsvangirai has described today as the saddest Independence Day since Zimbabwe's liberation from colonial rule. .
Zimbabweans walk to highlight their plight
Meanwhile a group of about 45 Zimbabweans living in South Africa has spent the night at a filling station near the Beitbridge border post between South Africa and Limpopo. The Peace and Democracy Project group embarked on a walk to the border from Johannesburg on Monday to highlight the plight of Zimbabweans.
Spokesperson of the group Bheki Jama says the group is also demanding the release of the March 29 Zimbabwean presidential election results. Jama says they will join millions of Zimbabweans who will be celebrating 28 years of their country's independence by demonstrating.
Plans for demonstrations in Musina and Beitbridge are yet to finalised.
