Mugabe will be addressing Zimbabwe's Independence Day celebrations
|
April 17, 2008, 22:30
Tomorrow marks the 28th anniversary of Zimbabwe's independence from Britain in 1980.
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is set to address the main celebrations in the capital Harare, amid a climate of political uncertainty.
Results from last month's presidential elections are still outstanding, more than two weeks after the poll. Shrugging off the delayed results saga, Mugabe kicked off Independence Day celebrations with a children's party in Harare.
For the first time since 1980, the celebrations are to take place amid uncertainty over the president's status. Some are questioning if Mugabe should even be delivering the key note address, but his party says the veteran leader is firmly in control.
Public attendance and participation in the celebrations will be watched keenly as many feel disillusioned by the results impasse.
A controversial recount of ballots in 23 constituencies is set to get underway on Saturday, a day after the public holiday.
