Mugabe confident of election victory

Robert Mugabe greets supporters at his final election rally in Harare yesterday - Reuters

The Zimbabwean President cast his vote today

March 29, 2008, 13:15

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe says he is confident of winning today's elections by a landslide majority.

Addressing journalists soon after casting his vote in Harare, the veteran leader ruled out the possibility of a run-off, saying his party is too strong for the opposition.

Voting got underway at 7am in presidential, parliamentary, senatorial and local government elections. Results are not expected for several days.

The Zimbabwean constitution states that should none of the presidential candidates score at least 51% of the votes a re-run between the top two has to be conducted. However, Mugabe says his party is poised for a convincing victory.

Although it has been reported that the elections are running smoothly so far, police were deployed at the house of a ruling Zanu-PF parliamentary candidate in the western suburbs of Bulawayo after it was reportedly bombed.
