Foreign observers and participants from African countries, including the DRC, Zimbabwe and Swaziland, say Lesotho is setting a good example for Africa. This is due to the constructive way in which it handles post election disputes. The delegate’s comments follow a three-day conference in the Lesotho capital, Maseru, on post-election conflict.
It was agreed that there is a need to detect early warning signs of conflict. Electoral Institute of Southern Africa Director, Vincent Tohbi says, “We are here to tell the people of Lesotho that there are many ways of dealing with conflict. The conflict they’re facing today is minor to what we experienced in the DRC, but they have to be precautious because those things can pre-empt serious turbulences in the country.”
Ade Adefuye, the special advisor to the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, says that if this dialogue was applied in Zimbabwe and the DRC, the commonwealth would not have expelled Zimbabwe and fighting would not have happened in the DRC.
