Laura Bush announced a grant to Mozambique
|
June 28, 2007, 05:45
Laura Bush, the American First Lady, is on a visit to Mozambique to promote the benefits of spraying homes with insecticide to combat malaria. During her visit, Bush handed out mosquito nets and announced a R14 million grant to help combat malaria.
She also announced that the US government's Millennium Challenge Corporation was to approve a R3.5 billion boost for the government of Mozambique
The treatable and preventable disease is one of Africa's greatest killers. Bush and Jenna, her daughter, were in Mozambique on the second leg of a four-nation Africa tour which focuses on efforts by the United States to provide health care and economic opportunities on the continent.
Combat malaria
Almost half of the R14 million would be spent on the provision of clean water that would help prevent waterborne diseases and malaria. Bush continues her African tour in Zambia today, and will continue on to Mali before returning to Washington.
