Thousands of students in Kenya stayed away from school today as schools re-opened for the first term of the year. This follows recent violence after general elections.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Kenyans went shopping as they braced for a tough week ahead following an announcement that the opposition will hold three days of mass protests.
In Western Kenya, at least 10 schools were set on fire during the skirmishes. The schools that were spared are sheltering displaced people. Although calm has returned in many areas, parents have opted to keep their children at home.
"We are still scared, we do not know if our children are safe alone," says Elizabeth Anyimba, one of the parents.
