ADVANCED SEARCH TIPS
How to use the SABC advanced search
The more words you enter, the more you can refined the results. |
By default the system assumes the words entered are to be search for as a phrase. Therefore by entering 'Cape Town' the system will search for the phrase 'Cape Town' and not for the words Cape and Town seperately. To search for a combination of words use AND or & (e.g. Cat AND Dog ; Cat & Dog). The system also accepts the use of OR or | between words (e.g. Reel OR Rod ; Reel | Rod).
To exclude certain words precede the word with a tilde (~) sign. Thus using 'orange ~apple' will return articles containing the word orange but exclude those articles that have the word apple even if they contain the word orange.
To explicitly define phrases or use the special operators AND or OR in a phrase one can use curly braces { }. e.g. {four and twenty blackbirds} or 'four {and} twenty blackbirds'
One can combine the above techniques along with round brackets ( ) which allow one to apply an order of precedence to create complex search criteria. e.g. ({Cape Town} AND (Rod OR Real)) OR Fishing
